Sunrise Sports & Entertainment announced today that Defenders of Wildlife and the Florida Panthers are teaming up in the fight to save Florida’s wild panthers.
Last year, 19 panthers were killed in vehicle collisions, the largest number killed by vehicles in a single year and a dangerously high death toll for a population of less than 160 individuals. Defenders of Wildlife is taking action with the “Give Panthers a Brake!” advertising campaign at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. The campaign kicked-off on March 3 and continues during all Panthers home games in March.
Defenders of Wildlife is running a high-profile advertising blitz at all eight March home games through th centerhung scoreboard, LED rings and lobby vision screens and through the team radio broadcast on Sports Radio 560 WQAM.
“This is a great opportunity to get the message out to Panthers fans and all Floridians that wild Florida panthers need their help,” said Defenders of Wildlife Florida program director Laurie Macdonald. “We hope this campaign will inspire Floridians to protect and preserve panther habitat, make roads safer for wildlife and help both landowners and panthers coexist. We’re excited that one of the NHL’s great franchises, the Florida Panthers, is working with us in this important conservation effort.”
“The Panthers organization is honored to team with Defenders of Wildlife to help save our franchise namesake – Florida’s wild panthers,” said SSE President Michael R. Yormark.

Eric Selleck will make his NHL debut, adding some toughness to Florida's roster in the absence of George Parros. Selleck has accumulated 16 points and 181 penalty minutes in 60 games in San Antonio this season.
"I don't know how many shifts I'm going to get, so the early ones count," Selleck said. "We've got a game plan, so I'll just try to keep it simple and stick to my role."
When an enforcer plays his first game in the League, there is often a game-within-the-game scenario. Selleck's role is no mystery to either team -- and that simplifies his approach.
"I know who they have, and they know why I'm here," he said. "I've got a few guys on the radar. It's going to be fun to see how it plays out."
Brennan appeared to fit in seamlessly, stepping off the plane to log 23:42 minutes of ice time. He posted a +1 rating and fired four shots on Isles goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, one resulting in the goal that sparked Florida's third period rally. His puck-carrying skills and ability to jump into the play put plenty of pressure on the Islanders defense and he did a nice job on the power play.
Brennan is an offensive-defenseman and with the Panthers desperately needing offense from anywhere and everywhere, it looks like this might be a good fit for both parties. If Brennan can provide the kind of effort we saw last night over the next 19 games, he may have said sayonara to the AHL for good and found himself a permanent home here in sunny South Florida. A small sample size, yes, but this trade looks like it could be a good one for Florida and even though that's a potential win of the off-ice variety, I'll take it, especially this season.

TJ Brennan is 23 years old and 6’1” 215 pounds. He has played in 36 games for the Rochester Americans posting a 14-21-35 scoring line. Brennan has played in ten games for the Sabres this season and scored one goal to go along with a -1 rating on the big club. Brennan was a 2nd round pick (31st overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
Jovanovski traveled to Boston and worked out Thursday morning. Jovanovski says if he feels good on Friday, he may play Saturday against the Islanders. Jovanovski has been out since Jan. 29 with a lower body ailment.
The worst news out of Tuesday could come in the following days when Kris Vertseeg's right knee is evaluated.
Versteeg -- who scored Florida's first goal 13 ticks into the second -- went sprawling after making contact with Radko Gudas and stayed on the ice in pain for a few minutes before being helped into the locker room.
The Panthers will listen to offers for Kris Versteeg and Tomas Fleischmann. Fleischmann has two years left at $4.5 million per season and he has a modified no-trade clause. Versteeg has three years left with a cap hit of $4.4 million, but salaries of $4.6 and 4.7 million.
[Scott] Timmins is accused of breaking into Benjamin Garza's home on Ridgecrest. Garza wasn't home at the time, but his wife and three kids woke up to the stranger on their couch.
The police report states that when Garza's wife found Timmins sitting on her couch, she asked him who he was, to which he responded, "Don't worry about that."
"He was yelling, 'What are you doing in my house,'" said Garza. "My wife said, 'You need to get the hell out of here,'" added Garza. She was able to escape through a back door with her kids.
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports that Panthers GM Dale Tallon is open to all trade offers for his players. There are a few notable exceptions, however.
Forwards Jonathan Huberdeau and Drew Shore, defenseman Erik Gudbranson and goalie Jacob Markstrom are reportedly off limits.
